Friday Nov 28th, Backyard Brawls and other sibling rivalry
11:00 West Virginia at #25 Pitt abc Aka the Backyard Brawl.
I wasn't a geography wiz, but aren't those in two different states? First played in 1895, Pitt is 60-37-3. It's all about revenge in this one as Pitt knocked the Mountaineers out of BCS title contention last year. Look for WV to rely on the legs of Pat White and their #10 Rushing Offense. When they do throw it they are more accurate than Pitt. Pitt has a habit of letting the other team score to get the ball back (#64 scoring D) and turning the ball over (92nd in give aways) and allowing Sacks (103rd). Pitt's strength is in their balance. The Mountaineers will take away the passing game and bring someone up to support the run, in that order.
Pitt's ranked, at home and getting 3 points. I'm taking the Mountaineers to win and cover.
11:30 Mississippi State at Ole Miss aka, The Egg Bowl, since 1901
These teams have played a total of 104 times, but weren't competing for the Golden Egg until 1927. Ole Miss leads the series 59-39-6. For more on Egg Bowl History http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egg_Bowl
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog and these Bulldogs will muster what little fight they have left for this game. To survive in the SEC, you have to have a pretty stingy scoring D and both of these teams do (MSU-48, UM-25). The Bulldogs have had trouble putting points on the board( 113th scoring O) and giving their D a breather. It will be the same this week.
The Right Reverend Rolls in his first Egg Bowl. The Rebels are giving 13 at home. I'm taking the home favorite and giving the points.
1:30 LSU at Arkansas, cbs, the Battle for the Golden Boot
This is a young rivalry, but lots of love between these teams none the Les. LSU leads the series 33-18-2. Petrino's brought his Big East fast break style to the SEC with no running offense (#99) and no rushing defense (#90). Field position will play a big roll in this one with Punt Returns (LSU-22. Ark -106) , Kick Returns (LSU-114, Ark-38) and Turnover Margin (LSU-88, Ark -102). Even with Rahem Alem filling the decimated QB role, the Tigers roll.
Petrino's Hogs are getting 4.5 at home. I'm taking the Tigers and giving the points. Who doesn't think Petrino has uhaul on speed dial?
2:30 Colorado at Nebraska, abc
Nebraska is 46-18-2 in the series. This series was movet at the beginning of the Big 12 to a Thanksgiving game to replace the traditional Big 8 Thanksgiving battle of OU vs Nebraska. If the Buffs can put together some sort of passing game, they just might have a chance against this Nebraska team that is 97th in Pass Efficiency D, unfortunately they are 92nd in pass efficiency themselves. The Buffs are 105th in scoring offense and 0-4 on the road this year. Not much chance of taking the crowd out of this one. Their only chance is for the huskers to beat themselves with turnovers (110th in turnover margin). Besides starting your son at QB in college is just bad form.
Huskers are giving 15 at home. Huskers win and cover with 7 to spare.
5:00 Fresno State at #9 Boise State, the deuce, Soon to be known as "the shellac in the WAC"
Boise St has won the WAC and Utah is ahead of them in the BCS standings so Utah should get the only non-BCS conference bid. Boise St is still playing for an undefeated season and BCS style points against the Bulldogs who were crowned BCS busters in September. Fresno St can run the ball (#31 rushing O) and has pretty good scoring efficiency when they get close (#33 scoring o). The only chance Fresno St has is to get some quick scores on special teams where they are better than Boise and grind the ball out. In this game, that's kind of like saying she has a "nice personality."
Boise State is giving 19.5 at home. They cover by double digits.
Now that you have overcome your tryptophan coma, we can get down to some real games on Saturday. When visiting Boise State I like to see...
