Happy Rivalry Week

This is Rivalry Week.   That means it is time to muster all of the hate you possibly can for your rival.  It’s OU – OSU x 2, The Iron Bowl, The Egg Bowl, Texas – Texas A&M,  Notre Dame – USC, South Carolina - Clemson and   Florida – Florida State.  In honor of all the tradition and pageantry that is college football, I’m going to pay tribute to some of the great (and not so) traditions that exist.

The 12th Man
Great tradition and it’s been around since 1922 started by E. King Gill ( sorry all of you High and Mighty fans) and it’s hard to beat.  Too bad that having a 12th or 13th man for that matter won’t be enough for the upset.

The Jeweled Shillelagh
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0811/cfb.unusual.trophies/content.4.html
This is the name of the trophy passed between USC and Notre Dame after the annual game.  It started in the 1950’s to commemorate this rivalry that has been ongoing since 1926.  I know what you are thinking but it’s supposed to look like a Gaelic War Club, not that.

The Egg Bowl
Ole Miss and Miss St have played each other a total of 104 times.  After a brawl in 1926 when the winning team tried to tear down the goal posts and the losing home team defended them with wooden chairs, the Golden Egg Trophy came to be.

Oklahoma State Cowboys
They have 107 years of football tradition including a loss to William and Mary, The Lewis Leap (stolen from the Green Bay Packers soon to be renamed the Pickens plunge), the Waving Song (stolen from the University of Kansas and a Broadway show OR part of the "Pickens Plan" to keep those windmills going), the 1954 poisoning of the OU team, Barry Sanders, Hart Lee Dykes and Johnny Bright.  Folks that’s a lot of tradition.  Go Pokes!!

Waving the Washington State Cougars Flag at ESPN Gameday
This one has only been around since 2003 but I love to see the flag behind the gameday crew.  It takes a lot of loyalty and pride to wave your alma mater flag when you know that you could be hated by both teams.
